Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 at Long Beach in CA. DuVernay was introduced to the arts from her grandmother Denise. DuVernay was influenced by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was a college student when she became fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury, and then examine their junk. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a new publicist at a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has launched lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Beauty Collective.
